Is the Diablo 3 Ancient Item Worth It?

When it comes to augmenting ancient items in Diablo 3, there seems to be a common misconception about when and how to do so. Many players follow a simple rule of thumb: 'level up to 80 before dropping augments.' However, this approach is oversimplified and may not apply to every build or player.

The truth is that the definition of 'high level' and 'mid level' gems changes as you progress in power. A build that struggles to hit GR70 may find it beneficial to augment with level 60 gems, allowing them to push higher and level up their gems more efficiently. On the other hand, a build that can clear GR85 without augments should generally avoid using gems below level 75-80.

So, when is it worth augmenting an ancient item? For me, it's all about prioritizing my gear and focusing on the most valuable pieces first. If I have mid-level gems available for augmenting, I target gear that is very good but not perfect. If I have higher-level gems, I focus on the best ancients I have.

I also don't start implementing augments until I feel like I'm hitting a wall. When my main gems (such as Trapped) drop below 60% upgrade chance, I begin upgrading gems for augmenting. And if you're just starting out with augments, don't feel the need to level up to a full boat of 80s before dropping them.

Ultimately, the key is to find a balance that works for your build and playstyle. Don't be afraid to experiment and adjust your approach as needed. And remember, unless you're an OCD numbers enthusiast, there's no need to every augment to the same level – focus on what matters most to your gameplay experience.
